For people who saw the Warm Bodies film, Julie’s friend Nora is meant to be black.

That’s the medical definition of the term. And if having dysphoria doesn’t make you trans, then what does?

-The Canadian One

Uh. If you don’t have dysphoria then why in high holy hell would you transition? Because you, on a whim, decided you wanted boobs/no boobs/a penis/a vagina?

So later, on another whim, will you decide you want to go back?

You’re turning trans issues into a joke. Haha I feel like trans today, not like yesterday. Maybe I won’t feel like trans tomorrow, but haha. It’s “cool” so.

People are suffering trapped in their bodies, the wrong bodies and they desperately want to be freed, and no one is going to vote for making transitioning surgeries, hormones, and the like to be covered by medical care if people literally think they can just decide to be trans one day because they feel like it.

I think I posted before about the work of someone at my uni, she gave a lecture and basically explained that dysphoria isn’t essential for someone to be trans and that some people don’t like that it’s medicalised as a mental illness. I shudda taped the lecture cos it was really good.
Basically being trans is maybe more like being infertile, you can’t have kids and that distresses you but you don’t have no child dysphoria. I hope this makes sense somehow.

I don’t exactly understand. I believe you have to have dysphoria to be trans/non binary, but I’m interested to hear your argument. I more agree with magicmage. It seems that without dysphoria, you’d really just decide you’re trans/non binary out of the blue one day.

This woman blew my mind, seriously. Before I was 100% down with the dysphoria is essential thing, afterwards I was like…wow, that actually makes sense.

In this lady’s research (she’s also published on the subject but its an expensive book) she came across trans people who’s discomfort stemmed not from dissatisfaction with their bodies, but from other peoples’ reactions to them. Not all trans people take up all intervention available to them eg the trans man photographer who opted to not have bottom surgery. Stuff like that.

Basically some people want to be treated like being trans isn’t a mental illness like the mental health manual DSM5 says, but feel that the only way they can attain bodies they want is to take on this concept of mental illness which is where the IVF argument comes in. People who can’t have kids aren’t mentally ill cos of it, but they still deserve medical intervention.

Thank you so much for being kind enough to listen to me, even though my view seems weird, other people have been rude to me over this before.

I try to be polite with people, as the trans situation is really something that is a bit touchy and unresearched, y’know? I think it’d be best to agree to disagree on this one, as a nonbinary individual who does experience dysphoria. However, what you said about some people not taking all the intervention; I believe that dysphoria isn’t a black and white thing, wherein you either want to fully transition or you don’t, and that it’s more of a gray spectrum. I also believe that the strict medical definition of dysphoria isn’t always right; as I said before, it tends to be under researched. I’ll still believe as I do, but as long as you respect my right to do so, I’ll respect yours. :>

I wish more of tumblr was like this lol
